What is Embedded System

An Embedded System is a computer that is a part of a machine or a device”.

What is Embedded System:

According to Jack Ganssle & Mike Bar from Embedded
A combination of computer hardware and software, and perhaps additional mechanical or other parts, designed to perform a dedicated function. In some cases, embedded systems are part of a larger system or product, as in the case of an antilock braking system in a car.
An Embedded System is designed for special purposes. Embedded computers are intended to operate on a specific machine or electronic device. Embedded computers (Embedded Systems) are Task-Specific which means they are optimized to perform a specific task. It works as a component in a larger product. These computers are very small in size and have limited hardware. They perform various functions according to the requirements of the product in which they are embedded.

Embedded Operating System:

Embedded Operating System is a System Software that manages all the other programs in an embedded device after initial load of programs by a boot loader.
The Linux operating system is inherited and modified by programmers & developers to make an embedded operating system. In most of electronic devices and embedded systems the Linux Embedded Operating System is used.

Uses of Embedded Systems:

Embedded Systems are used in commonly used products like:
Electronics & Computing devices: Printers & Copiers, Fax Machine, time recording systems, Television, Smartphones, Video recorders, Digital Cameras, DVD Players, CD Players, Blu-Ray players & gaming consoles like Xbox, PlayStation etc.
Home devices: Security and monitoring systems like CCTV Cameras, Burglar Alarm system, Fire & smoke detection systems, Backup lighting & generators, Ventilating Systems and home appliances such as Microwave Oven, Air conditioners, Washing Machine.
Automobile: Car Engine controller, Airbag controller, GPS Navigation system.
Process Controller & Robotics: Automated factories, Manufacturing & Assembling plants, Nuclear Stations, Oil refineries, Machine Controllers & Medical equipment like Blood pressure monitor, Electro Cardiogram and various types of Robots used in complex medical procedures.
